Jewel Academy Awards
NEW YORK (AP) — Once again, it was #DirectorsSoMale at the Oscars.“Congratulations to those men,” said presenter Issa Rae pointedly, after the announcement of an all-male directors slate. Denied were contenders like Greta Gerwig, director of “Little Women,” and Lulu Wang of “The Farewell.”Continuing another troubling trend that the Oscars cannot seem to shake: In the acting nominations, it was almost #OscarsSoWhite, with Cynthia Erivo of “Harriet” the only acting nominee of color out of 20 nods. Golden Globe winner Awkwafina (“The Farewell”) was denied a chance at an Oscar. When Awkwafina won a Globe earlier this month for “The Farewell,” it was a proud moment — the first win by an actress of Asian descent in the lead category.
There was much hope for an Oscar nod, but alas, it was not to be; in fact the much-admired film was shut out.“FROZEN 2” is “LOST IN THE WOODS”Disney’s hugely successful “Frozen 2” wasn’t feeling any warmth on Monday as the much-awaited sequel to the Oscar-nominated original was left out in the cold — or lost in the woods, in the words of one of its more popular songs. The blockbuster animated feature (did we mention it was a hit?) did score a nomination for original song, for “Into the Unknown.” But in the top category it was iced out by “How to Train Your Dragon,” “I Lost My Body,” “Klaus,” “Missing Link,” and “Toy Story 4.”ADAM SANDLER WAS A GEM, BUT HE’S CUTSandler was roundly praised for his charismatic performance as a desperate jewel salesman in the Safdie brothers’ exhausting and exhilarating “Uncut Gems.” His fans hoped he could find his way to an Oscar nod, but the crowded best actor category left him no room. AND SPEAKING OF CUTSMuch was made of the clever editing in “1917,” which was made to appear as if it were one continuous take.
Yet editor Lee Smith, who ingeniously hid all the cuts, was left off the editing list. The movie did pull in a hefty 10 nominations.Other key snubs: Robert De Niro in “The Irishman,” Eddie Murphy in “Dolemite is My Name,” Jamie Foxx in “Just Mercy,” Christian Bale in “Ford v Ferrari;” Taron Egerton in “Rocketman.”.
For the second year running, the 2020 Oscars did not have a host. But there were still plenty of one-liners on the night of the ceremony, with guest.

Photo by Jim Smeal/WireImageFirst let me clear something up. Every year when the Oscars roll around some people in my jewelry circles have a fantasy that stars from the golden era of Hollywood were magnificently bejeweled in their own pieces at the event. I hate to rain on anyone’s parade, but I must report, for the most part, they weren’t.
Trust me, I have done the leg work. Oh, sure there might be a couple of examples of nice pieces here and there, but on the whole, the jewels in the old Hollywood days were not on a scale of the (admittedly borrowed, but still) masterpieces we see on the red carpet today. The one mega exception to this rule is, of course, Elizabeth Taylor. From the time she was a child star, Taylor attended the Oscars. She was nominated for five Best Actress prizes and won twice for her roles in Butterfield 8 (1960) and Who’s Afraid of Virginia Wolf? (1966). She wore it in 1993 when she received the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award Photo Sally DaviesOver the years, she sparkled in several sensational jewels from her own collection at the ceremony. In 1957 she put on the antique diamond tiara she received from Mike Todd. Her Van Cleef & Arpels 32.14-carat cognac diamond ring and earrings from Richard Burton were her accessories for the 1974 Oscars.
At the 1970 ceremony, the world got a long look at the 69.42-carat pear shape diamond that made headlines around the world when Richard Burton purchased it for just over one-million from Cartier. At the time, it was the most expensive diamond in the world. There are several other examples of great treasures Elizabeth Taylor wore at the Oscars and with her passion for jewelry I am certain she deeply loved each and every one of them. Yet, I feel if she were here today, she might just say the AIDS Awareness Red Ribbon she put on with her and 33.19-Krupp diamond ring for the Oscars in 1992 was the most important piece she wore for Hollywood’s biggest night. The fire engine red swath of satin represented Elizabeth Taylor’s new role in life as an AIDS activist. The star had been sporting the piece for all her appearances in 1992. You can find pictures of her wearing the Red Ribbon virtually from the moment it was created as a symbol of AIDS awareness by the Visual AIDS Artists Caucus in 1991. Indeed, Elizabeth Taylor was among the first high profile people to speak out on behalf of the pandemic crisis and raise awareness of the disease. Looney tunes dash episode 5. She was driving force that helped turn the perception of AIDS around in the rough years when it was a highly controversial subject. By the time she sported the red ribbon at the Oscars, almost everyone in attendance wore the pins. Photo by Kevin Mazur/WireImageThe following year, the Hollywood community recognized Taylor’s tireless efforts for the AIDS cause and presented her with the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award. For the evening, the actress wore a ruby and gold rendition of the AIDS Awareness pin with her yellow Valentino dress and a joyful daisy diamond and chrysoprase necklace by Van Cleef & Arpels. During her moving speech, she spoke about the work that still needed to be done in terms of the way AIDS patients were treated. She said:“Tonight, I am asking for your help.
I call upon you to draw from the depths of your being to prove that we are a human race, to prove that our love outweighs our need to hate, that our compassion is more compelling than our need to blame, that our sensitivity of those in need is stronger than our greed, that our ability to reason overcomes our fear and that at the end of each of our lives we can look back and be proud that we have treated others with the kindness, dignity and respect that every human being deserves.”Watch Ms. Taylor’s entire acceptance speech in the video below and look for some of her red ribbons photographed in this story to appear on the red carpet at the 2017 Oscars on Sunday night in honor of the 25th Anniversary of the first appearance of the ribbons at the event in 1992.
